The first set of logo compositions for False Creek Healthcare Centre. The themes for these logos focused on Hope, Partners, Urgent Care and Canada. As usual labelled numerically with comic sans ms. All fonts deserve love.

To redesign or to not redesign, that is the question

Not all redesigns require a brand overhaul. The need to rebrand every time is a mistake that new designers often make. We’ve all been there, the need to make the design truly yours can be tempting. Over zealous rebranding however is a good way to alienate a client. Green Collar already has a great brand and a great looking site. What they want is to clean up their site to give it a sleeker and more sophisticated appearance.

The old Green Collar site is not bad, however there are issues with Hierarchy. The first question I ask is which elements are the most important.

1. Logo

I increased the dominance of the logo by adding white space around it. I also reduced the real estate of the login bar and donate menu to further increase the dominance of the logo.

2. Menu

Lightened the colours in the menu so that it doesn’t overtake the logo. This also removes the very heavy line dividing the header into two.

3. Header

Increased the white space around the header and reduced the white space as the page goes down. This increases the dominance of the header while encouraging the eye to travel down the page.

4. News/Blog buttons

Removed “Read this post” buttons as the headliner links to the same content.

5. Featured Organization banners

Reduced the size of externally linked partner banners.

I also worked on consistency. I toned down the colour palette by making sure the same shades of blues and greens were used. I hacked away at their CSS so that the font types and sizes were consistent.

All the changes I made were small, but it lends to a more cohesive website.

The first 2 drawings I’ve done in the new year. Here Comes the Bride was designed for my company Something Green. As for the Pikachu inspired bunnies, I have no explanation.

No Money, No Problem Christmas

December rolls along and I realize I have not saved up nearly enough money to buy my friends and families Christmas gifts. (Curse you unemployment!) Thought I’m sure my friends miss my usual economy class gifts of soaps, chocolates or movie tickets, I really hope they enjoyed my “hand-made” gifts better.

Mehndi Card Design – Something Green

New card design for Something Green. Drawing in this style requires a lot of patience and many breaks to keep from getting sloppy. This is the 2nd time I’ve drawn in this style (see Henna card). This time around I had a plan. During Henna I was too anxious about getting all the details and swoops in that I neglected the composition. The result was an un-anchored layout (it feels floaty). With Mehndi, I stuck to basic outlines until I was happy with the composition and white space balance. Lesson learned.

Sci-Fi RTS Front End

Another UI practice for me. Graphics and icons by me. 3D background by Visual Paradox.
These are mockups, not a real game. However, I was playing the Battlestar Galactica board game before designing these and took much of the game mechanics as inspiration. Note to self: Learn how to draw spaceships.

Hayley Miller Artwork

I briefly posted some sketches for a new secret project I was working on. The project has launched and I can now share my process and final work.

The client was Hayley Miller. An eco-friendly, award winning make-up artist. She had commissioned artwork from Laura Gibson years ago, and she still loved the artwork. However, she wanted the look of her brand to be more softer and ethereal. She also specifically requested an anime style. Here are the results.

Another Hops Studios banner, the duck returns

Another AdHack commission for Hops Studios. AdHack recently launched their ‘Hire this Creator’ functionality, and I was the very first designer to get hired on their site!

These Hops banners are a lot of fun. It is pretty much designing an Infographic. Not only does it have to look good, but it has to accurately communicate the purpose of the module. ECS Amazon module banner & icons. #1 is the original, #2 is after client feedback.

My blog has been quiet lately, thought I have very busy with multiple projects. I do not want to post my work on these projects as many of them are redesign projects, and I will be waiting for them to launch before I blog about them.
